Admissions Policy

Foundation

There are no previous requirements for a child applying for a place in Foundation.

If a child has special needs, the ALN Department will be involved in the Admission procedure to ensure that The British School of Málaga can provide the required support. If the school lacks the resources to cover the needs, the family will be informed and alternatives will be recommended.

Primary

The British School of Málaga requests school reports from the previous 2 years when a child applies for a place in Primary.

From Year 1 upwards, children will be invited to spend a Taster Day at The British School of Málaga. During the day, the tutor will conduct an English test as required and the child will take part in all regular activities. The tutor and the Head of Primary will give their feedback to the Admissions Department by means of a Google form to be sent within 48 hours.

If the child is unable to attend, a set of English/Maths tests will be sent to the current school so that they can be taken there.

Primary students who are offered a place at The British School of Málaga on a conditional basis will take an English as a Second Language course. This course will be taught during the school day, from 1 to 4 hours a day, for a period of one, two or three months depending on the initial assessment.

An unconditional offer will be made if the student is proficient in English. If the child is not proficient in English but has an average or above-average performance in all other subjects, a conditional offer will be made.

Secondary (KS3)

The British School of Málaga requests primary school reports from the previous 2 years for a student applying for a place in Secondary.

Prospective students will be invited to spend a Taster Day at The British School of Málaga. During the day, the Head of English will conduct an English test. The student will also attend a Mathematics class and the Head of Maths will assess the student. If the student is applying for Year 7 and spends the taster day in Year 6, all these tests will be conducted by the tutor.

The Heads of English and Maths as well as the Head of Secondary will give their feedback to the Admissions Department.

If the student is proficient in English, an unconditional offer will be made. If the student is not proficient in English but his/her academic records show that he/she has passed the core subjects and most other subjects, an offer will be made on a conditional basis.

Secondary students who are offered a place at The British School of Málaga on a conditional basis will take an English as a Second Language course. This course will be taught during the school day, from 1 to 4 hours a day, for a period of one, two or three months depending on the initial assessment.

If the student is unable to attend, a set of English/Maths/Science tests will be sent to his/her current school so that they can be taken there.

Secondary (KS4)

The British School of Málaga requests school reports from the previous 2 years, as a minimum, with passes in the core subjects and most optional subjects as well as English proficiency from all those applying for KS4.

In the case of Spanish students who have previously followed the Spanish curriculum and are seeking validation of their studies, passes in “Lengua Castellana y Literatura” and “Geografía e Historia” are required.

Prospective students will be invited to spend a Taster Day at The British School of Málaga. During the day, the Head of English will conduct an English test. They will also attend a Mathematics and Science class, and the Head of Maths and the Head of Science will assess the student.

The Heads of English, Maths and Science as well as the Head of Secondary will give their feedback to the Admissions Department.

If the student is unable to attend, a set of English/Maths/Science tests will be sent to his/her current school so that they can be taken there and they will be interviewed digitally (Skype or similar).

Sixth Form

The British School of Málaga requests school reports from the previous 4 years, as a minimum, and English proficiency from all applicants for KS5. A minimum of 5 (I)GCSEs and/or the ESO or similar will be required.

In the case of Spanish students who have previously followed the Spanish curriculum and are seeking validation of their studies, the ESO diploma or any other equivalent qualification in accordance with the Spanish Education authorities will be required.

Prospective students will be invited to attend an interview at The British School of Málaga. They will be interviewed by the Head of Secondary or the School Principal.

Feedback will be given to the Admissions Department.

If the student is unable to attend, an English test will be sent to their current school so that it can be taken there and they will be interviewed digitally (Skype or similar).
